Every Baby Loss Matters: Free Maternal Mental Health Support for Pregnancy Loss, Infant Loss, and Infertility Across All 50 States This October Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

This October something extraordinary is happening across America. More than 140 landmarks, bridges, buildings, and public spaces are turning pink and blue. Candlelight is spreading from coast to coast. Billboards in cities nationwide are declaring that every baby loss matters. And Chasing the Rainbows, a national 501c3 nonprofit organization, is calling on healthcare providers, clinicians, families, and communities across the country to help spread a message that America has long needed to say louder: every baby loss matters.

Miscarriage is baby loss. Chemical pregnancy is baby loss. Ectopic pregnancy is baby loss. Embryo transfer failure is baby loss. Stillbirth is baby loss. Infant loss is baby loss. Infertility, the monthly cycle of hope and grief that millions of families endure, is baby loss. And every single family living through any one of these experiences deserves free, accessible, and comprehensive mental health and grief support from the moment their loss begins.

Chasing the Rainbows was founded on that belief. And this October the organization is running its most expansive national campaign to date, reaching one million families a year across all 50 states, completely free.

THE MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS BEHIND THE STATISTICS

Pregnancy and infant loss is one of the most common and most undertreated mental health crises in American medicine. One in four pregnancies ends in loss. One in six couples faces infertility. Twenty-one thousand families experience stillbirth every year. Twenty-four thousand experience infant loss. Fifteen million people undergo fertility treatments annually.

The mental health consequences are severe and well documented. Families who experience perinatal loss face significantly elevated rates of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and prolonged grief disorder. Infertility carries its own relentless psychological toll, a grief that has no public ritual, no bereavement leave, and no universal language in clinical settings. Embryo transfer failure, chemical pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, and early miscarriage are routinely minimized in clinical encounters despite carrying the same emotional weight as later losses for the families who live through them.

The gap between the prevalence of these experiences and the availability of free, accessible mental health support for them is one of the most significant unaddressed crises in maternal and perinatal care. Most families leave the hospital or the fertility clinic with a pamphlet, a follow-up appointment, and no connection to peer support, trauma therapy, or community. Chasing the Rainbows was built to close that gap, permanently, nationally, and at no cost to any family.

AMERICA LIGHTS UP PINK AND BLUE

Last year the Empire State Building turned pink and blue. The Helmsley Building glowed in honor of babies loved and lost. Niagara Falls, one of the most iconic natural wonders in the world, was illuminated pink and blue for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month for the first time. Hopkins Dome lit up. M and T Stadium joined the campaign. Dozens more landmarks across the country followed.

This October the reach is expanding further. Beginning October 1st and culminating on October 15th, the International Day of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance, more than 140 landmarks, bridges, buildings, and public spaces across all 50 states will illuminate pink and blue in honor of every baby lost and every family still carrying that loss.

Each lighting is a visible declaration to every grieving family watching from their window that they are not invisible. That their baby mattered. That someone is fighting for them.

If you would like to nominate a landmark or building in your city to be part of this year's campaign visit chasingtherainbows.org to learn more.

WAVE OF LIGHT: OCTOBER 15TH

On the evening of October 15th, the International Day of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance, families across all 50 states are invited to participate in the Wave of Light. At 7pm local time, light a candle in honor of the babies loved and lost and let it burn for one hour. The wave travels from coast to coast as time zone by time zone families join together in grief and in community.

Chasing the Rainbows is hosting candlelight vigils in communities nationwide on October 15th. These are gatherings where loss families, partners, healthcare providers, and advocates come together in person to honor every baby and every family. Visit chasingtherainbows.org for vigil locations near you.

If there is no vigil in your city you can host one. Chasing the Rainbows will support you. Reach out at info@chasingtherainbows.org.

EVERY BABY LOSS MATTERS: THE NATIONAL BILLBOARD CAMPAIGN

Throughout October, billboards across the country are carrying a message that every form of reproductive loss deserves recognition and support. The Every Baby Loss Matters national outdoor and digital billboard campaign affirms that miscarriage, chemical pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, embryo transfer failure, stillbirth, and infant loss are all legitimate grief experiences. Every one of them. No loss is too early. No grief is too small. Every baby loss matters.

If you see a billboard in your city share it on social media and tag Chasing the Rainbows. Every share reaches another family who needs to know free support exists.

BABY LOSS AWARENESS WEEK CHALLENGES

Baby Loss Awareness Week runs during October and Chasing the Rainbows is inviting families, healthcare providers, and advocates to participate in community challenges that spread awareness, share stories, and connect grieving families to free support. Follow Chasing the Rainbows on social media and visit chasingtherainbows.org for challenge details and how to participate.

AN EVENING BEHIND THE MASK: OCTOBER 17TH

On October 17th, Chasing the Rainbows hosts An Evening Behind the Mask, an elegant national masquerade gala bringing together families, community leaders, healthcare providers, corporate sponsors, and advocates to raise the funds that keep every single program free for every family in every state.

The masquerade theme speaks to something the loss community understands deeply. So many grieving families have learned to wear a mask in public, to hold themselves together while quietly falling apart. This evening is an invitation to take the mask off. To be seen. To be held by a community that understands. And to ensure that the next family who leaves the hospital with empty arms finds something extraordinary waiting for them.

WHAT EVERY BABY LOSS MEANS CLINICALLY

Chasing the Rainbows asks healthcare providers and medical advisory council members to help patients and colleagues understand that the full spectrum of reproductive loss carries legitimate and significant mental health implications that deserve clinical recognition and referral.

A chemical pregnancy is a loss. The family who experienced it is grieving even if their provider does not use that language.

A failed embryo transfer is a loss. The couple sitting in the clinic after that call has just experienced a grief event that may require mental health support.

An ectopic pregnancy is a loss. It is also often a traumatic medical emergency, and the combination of physical trauma and grief requires specialized perinatal mental health support that most families never receive.

An early miscarriage dismissed as a common occurrence is still a loss. The research is clear that gestational age does not predict grief intensity. Providers who communicate this to patients change the trajectory of their healing.

Infertility itself is a cumulative grief experience. Each failed cycle, each negative test, each treatment that does not result in a living baby is a loss. The mental health burden of infertility is equivalent to that of other serious chronic conditions and should be treated accordingly.

Chasing the Rainbows is equipped to support families through all of these experiences. Every program is available from the first loss through pregnancy after loss and everything in between.

FOR EVERY HEALTHCARE PROVIDER READING THIS

No matter what kind of loss they have experienced. No matter what state they live in. No matter when they need it.
